MiracleCord is Heparin-free. We use Citrate Phosphate Dextrose (CPD) exclusively in our cord blood collection materials, which is the safest, most effective anticoagulant used in the industry today. CPD is used to prevent cord blood from clotting while in transit to the lab.
The use of Heparin as an anticoagulant with cord blood is discouraged because it begins to break down 12 hours after blood collection. This breakdown can lead to the formation of blood clots, which may render your baby's cord blood unfit for processing.1
A study comparing dry heparin to CPD determined that cord blood units collected with liquid CPD contained significantly more TNC and CD34+ (indicators of the number of viable stem cells) than those collected with dry heparin.2
For cord blood collection, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends the use of citrate-based anticoagulants, such as CPD, to minimize the risk of the cord blood clotting prior to processing.
The high toxicity of Heparin to stem cells can be particularly dangerous to cord blood units having lower volume.
